Everything collided and I ended up on top!
I came into the world of personal training after many trials in both my personal life and professional life. I attended college during a time when my metabolism was its fastest and my motivation at it’s slowest. I was always an active kid. I was a dancer since I was a child and a cheerleader from 6th grade through high school. I was probably 100 pounds when I started college, so the partying and crappy food still kept me at a normal weight for my height. Even though college was a lot of fun it was a difficult time for me emotionally. College is a time for soul-searching and finding yourself and your passions. But for me it was like I wasn’t finding anything but stress. I knew I wanted to help people so I declared Psychology as a major as late as humanly possible. I think it was the beginning of my junior year. By this time I rarely made it to the gym if ever and decided to move in with 3 guys. One year, several beer pong tournaments, and hundreds of bags of Doritos later, I was ready to finish up college and get on with my life. I was heavier but still not really overweight, maybe a little curvier. Anyway, getting on with my life didn’t quite happen. Suddenly, I was walking down the aisle graduating from college with no clue what I was going to do with my life. Long story short, I quit my job in retail (I was a college grad – I wasn’t gonna keep working at the mall, right?) before actually getting a job anywhere else. I had a job lined up but they ended up giving it to someone else. So I was unemployed and felt like crap. Scary things happen when someone with a big appetite is depressed with a lot of time on their hands. I basically packed on about 35 pounds in a couple of months. Now I stand 5 feet tall on a good day, so 35 pounds is like 50 for someone of an average height. This was quite possibly the worst time of my life. I knew I wanted to look and feel better and find some real drive and passion but nothing was clicking. Then one shopping trip to the Gap when the “fat jeans” were still too tight finally made me realize how big and unhappy I was and I knew I needed to make some changes. I started weight watchers and dusted off the old tae bo workout videos. It was tough in the beginning but every single pound eventually came off. Eventually I realized, working out was becoming my favorite thing to do. The feeling of physical empowerment was amazing. And looking in the mirror at my old body felt great. So from the darkness of being overweight and clueless came the beauty of finally discovering my life’s passion. Not only did I find my passion but exercise became my Prozac and eventually my career. I have never felt better in my life. I feel strong and in control. The only thing that beats the high after a great workout is the satisfaction of knowing that I am acting as a source of positive change for other people as well! I truly understand my clients and am living proof that you can bounce back and keep kicking ass!!!

Hiya Julie!
Love the blog! You’ve known me for quite a few years now, as well as my struggles with my weight. I have tossed around many options and am now researching surgical options. Last year I joined Team In Training for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. I participated in the Disney World Half Marathon in January and plan on completing the Nike Women’s Marathon in October. This is my last shot before I have to seriously consider bariatric surgery. I will frequently check the blog on my way! Congrats on all your success!
georgette
Georgette it’s so awesome to see your running and fitness updates on facebook! It’s a great step in the right direction! I certainly believe that you can reach your goals without surgery. Even if you have struggled in the past that does not mean this this time around your efforts won’t work. If I can help you in any way with diet, exercise or running, please let me know. I have faith in your girl. One step, one mile at a time, and you will find success
